PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team begins Empire 8 conference play this week with a home game against Sage College on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 1:00 P.M.

Last season, the team was 7-2 in Empire 8 play, good for a berth in the conference tournament. There, they lost to Houghton University in the semifinals.

The Cardinals are 1-5 on the year and went 0-2 last week, dropping games to SUNY Geneseo and RPI.

Looking Out On Defense: When the ball gets by the goalie, the last hope for the defending team lies in the field players to make a defensive save. So far this season, the Cardinals have had eight defensive saves, including two each by senior Rileigh Luste and sophomore Emma Muchow. They're tied for fifth in the Empire 8 in the category.

Sage History: The Cardinals have dominated Sage College since the Gators began their varsity field hockey program in 2018. St. John Fisher has won all four meetings with Sage by a combined score of 36-0, including a 10-0 victory last season that fell just one goal short of the program record for goals in a game. The only team Fisher has a better record against is Keuka (5-0).

This year, Sage enters the week 1-3 overall. Last week, they beat Dean, 6-0, but fell to RPI, 4-1. They'll have a non-conference game against Saint Joseph on Thursday before their showdown with the Cardinals on Saturday.

Player To Watch: Junior forward Taylor Scrocca had a career game against Sage last season, scoring three goals against the Gators. Currently third on the team in points (four points on a goal and two assists), Scrocca will look for more success against Sage this season.
