PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed at home against Hartwick College on Wednesday night in the Empire 8 Semi Final game. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals won by a 17-6 final score. Sydney Carpenter set the single season record for draw controls with her sixth draw control of the game. She now stands at 157 draw controls on the season. With this win, Fisher now holds a 15-2 overall record.
Kaley Griffin got the scoring started for the Cardinals at the 11:05 minute mark, assisted by Courtney O'Dea. 30 seconds later, Tara Osterdale found Mary Fiorentino cutting through the eight and she put it away. With the first free-position attempt of the game, Cara Landry gives the Cardinals a three-goal lead. With 5:28 to go in the first, Griffin tallies another goal, assisted by O'Dea. Up next, Fiorentino gets it to O'Dea who finds the back of the net, Fisher leads 5-0. Carpenter with the next draw control, gets it to Farrah Zalla who brings fisher up by six. To end the first quarter, Griffin gets a hat trick, assisted by Fiorentino. To start the second, Hartwick gets on the board, but answering right back is Mykenzie Black, assisted by O'Dea once again. Next, Fisher records two goals ten seconds apart, Fiorentino and Emma Biel with the tally, Cardinals lead 11-1 and secure running time. Heading into halftime, Dharma Makarowsky puts ones away simultaneous with the whistle, Cardinals lead 13-2.
Black controls the first draw of the third frame and brings it into the offensive end. Griffin nets her fourth goal of the day assisted by Osterdale to get the third quarter scoring started. The Hawks answer back to make the score 14-3. Griffin scores her second straight and fifth of the game, a season high. Carpenter intercepts the ball on a Hawks clear and runs it down the field herself to put it in the back of the net and make it 16-3. On the next draw control, Carpenter comes up with the loose ball and set the single season draw control record. Hartwick ends the quarter with a goal to make it 16-4 heading into the fourth. To start, the Hawks get their second straight. With 10:36 to go, Black takes it hard to cage and gets her second of the day. At the end of 60 minutes the Cardinals came out on top by a 17-6 final score and advance to the Empire 8 Championship game.
Griffin led the team in goals with five on the night, she added one ground ball. O'Dea leading the way with points, she recorded two goals and four assists for six points, adding one ground ball. Carpenter leading in the midfield with five ground balls, two caused turnovers, eight draw controls and recorded one goal and one assist. On the defensive end, Lowney had three ground balls, one caused turnover and nine draw controls.
Up next for the Cardinals, the team will compete in the Empire 8 Championship game at home on Saturday May 6 against Nazareth College.
