Men’s Lacrosse Moves On To E8 Championship With Win Over Hartwick

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against Hartwick College at home on Wednesday night for an Empire 8 Semi-Finals match. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals came out on top by a 24-7 final score. Fisher had 14 different goal scorers throughout the game. With this win, the Cardinals will advance to the Empire 8 Championship game on Saturday. Fisher now holds a 9-9 overall record.

Timmy Salit got things started with the first goal of the match just one minute in. A penalty on Hartwick ended in a Cardinal goal. Salit then found Samuel Miller, who put one away man-up to move the Fisher lead to 2-0. Ben Hammond with a save on the defensive end gives Fisher another early scoring opportunity. Lane Edinger takes it hard to cage and gets the tally, 3-0 Cardinals up. The Hawks get on the board for their first of the day. Just 40 seconds later, Salit finds the back of the net, assisted by Griffin Dautrich, Fisher goes back up by three. The Hawks put two quick goals away to bring the score to 4-3 heading into the second quarter.

To start the second, Dugan Doeblin capitalizes on a Hartwick turnover, assisted by Edinger. Jack Cornell with the caused turnover on the defensive end, transitions it down to the offense. Salit with his third of the day brings Fisher's advantage to three. The Hawks cut the lead to two less than a minute later. The Cardinals record four straight goals to head into halftime leading 10-4, Jacob Gallina, Colin Blakeslee, Ethan Kesselring and Miller all contributing.

The Cardinals came out of halftime and put away two goals just 22 seconds apart. Matthew Kemmis getting his first of the day, assisted by Doeblin and Tyler Edinger unassisted bringing the Fisher lead to 12-4. Kemmis with a caused turnover on a Hawks clear attempt brings it down and puts it away. With 6:49 left in the third, Gallina gets his second of the day before Fisher finishes out the third recording five straight goals. The Cardinals head into the fourth leading 19-5.

Salit gets his fourth of the day assisted by Kemmis to start out the final frame. The Hawks goalkeeper throws one away to keep the ball in Fishers offensive end and Matt Slowinski capitalizes, getting his first of the day. The Cardinals string together three more goals throughout the fourth, Kesselring, Quinn Peters, and Ty McHerron all getting on the board. As time ran out, Fisher came out on top by a 24-7 final score.

Salit led the way on the offensive end, finishing with four goals and two assists for six points, he added two ground balls and one caused turnovers. Miller and Kemmis both ended with three goals and one assist. Miller with three ground balls, Kemmis with one ground ball and three caused turnovers. Cornell on defensive end recorded five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will compete in the Empire 8 Championship game at home on Saturday against Nazareth College.
