GRANVILLE, OH – The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team's 2023 season came to an end on Saturday as the Cardinals competed in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Fisher fell to the no. 11 University of Lynchburg, 11-10 in overtime.
The first half was close for the two teams. Samuel Miller scored the opening goal at the 12:39 mark but a minute later the Hornets evened the score. This is how the entire first half continued. Tyler Edinger scored at 9:05 and Brady Mason gave the team a lead with 30 seconds to go in the first, but both timed Lynchburg responded. In the second, the hornets took the one goal advantage, but Mason evened the score at 4-4 with just under 12 minutes to play. Edinger recorded his second goal of the day, and Jacob Gallina added one of his own in the final moments of the half to even the score at 6-6 going into the break.
The Cardinals were outscored 3-0 in the third quarter, but were able to mount the comeback in the fourth. Edinger (11:17) and Ethan Kesselring (05:31) cut the deficit to 9-8 before the Hornets scored their tenth of the day. In the final three minutes of regulation, Gallina recorded two goals to tie the game and send it into overtime, where Lynchburg was able to prevail.
Edinger and Gallina each finished with a hat trick, with Mason adding two goals and two assists. Ben Hammond was the goalie for the Cardinals and recorded 13 saves.
