Softball Clinches Playoff Spot After Battle With Elmira

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team traveled to Elmira College on Thursday for an Empire 8 doubleheader. The Cardinals split the two games against the Soaring Eagles, and the results moves their record to 23-11 overall and 10-4 in conference play. The win also secures a conference tournament spot for Fisher, as they currently sit in second place with two games to play.

Game One: Fisher 4 – Elmira 5

The Soaring Eagles jumped out to an early lead, scoring their five runs in the first three innings. The Cardinals scored twice in the second to even the score at 2-2. It started with a walk by Mari Spitz and a sacrifice bunt by Amalia DeMartino moved her over to scoring position. Allie Klonowski followed with a base hit and stolen base to put runners on second and third. An error by Elmira allowed both runners to cross home plate.

Both teams were held without another run until the seventh inning. Maddie Donlin, Madi Rose and Tori LoPresto all singled. A couple of batters later, Spitz came to bat with the bases loaded and two outs. She came up with a clutch single to left field to bring in two runs and cut the deficit to just one run. Unfortunately, the comeback came up short and the team fell by a final score of 5-4.

Jess Patterson recorded the loss, allowing five runs in 3.0 innings of work. Ainsley Evanetski came in for relief and through 3.0 scoreless innings of two hit ball.

In the first frame, after DeMartino, Spitz and Clare Boegel got on base, Klonowski sent a shot to left center to give the team a 4-0 lead after her grand slam. The scoring continued in the second inning. An error by Elmira scored two runs before Boegel singled to left to drive in Rose. Klonowski moved the lead to 10-0 with a three-run homerun to center field.

The Cardinals added runs in the fourth and fifth to total 13 runs in five innings of action. On the mound, Evanetski drew the start and recorded the win after going the full 5.0 innings and allowing no runs and just one hit.
