PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against Ithaca College at home on Tuesday for an out of conference match up. After being tied at half 7-7, The Cardinals finished strong and won by a 16-14 final score. Fisher now holds a 7-9 overall record, while the Bombers are now 6-8.
Ithaca got a fast start and recorded the first goal of the game. At the 11:24 minute mark, capitalizing on a Ithaca turnover was Colin Blakeslee who puts it away, the teams are tied at one a piece. The Bombers answer back and score the next five goals to head into the second quarter leading 6-1.
The Cardinals came out in the second and converted on a man-up opportunity, Brett Seaman finds Matthew Kemmis who gets his first of the day to make it 6-2. Brian Jantz with a caused turnover on the defensive end gets the ball down the field for a Cardinals possession. Timmy Salit finds Kemmis for his second to cut the Bomber lead to 6-3. With 5:47 until half, Keaton Piconi takes it hard to cage to put it away, Cardinals down by two. Another crucial turnover from Ithaca turns into a Fisher goal, Seaman finds Samuel Miller who fires one in. Less than one minute later, on the next play, Piconi gets Blakeslee the ball and he ties it up a 6-6. With 2:36 to go in the second, Griffin Dautrich gives Fisher their first lead if the day, 7-6. The Bombers get the final goal of the half to bring the score to 7-7.
To start the third quarter, Ithaca tallies one, gaining back a 8-7 lead. Answering right back is Piconi from Brady Mason to tie it back up at eight a piece. The Cardinals score two straight to gain their biggest lead of the night at 10-8. Kemmis and Salit with the tallies. The Bombers end the run to bring the Fisher lead back to one. Capitalizing on a man-up opportunity off an Ithaca offside is Ethan Kesselring from Salit to make it 11-9, Fisher leads. Ithaca cuts it to one once again, 11-10 1:41 left in the third. With 19 seconds left in the quarter, Tyler Edinger gets the ball to Mason who puts it in the back of the net to bring Fisher up 12-10 heading into the fourth.
To start the fourth, Connor Mesh caused a turnover on the defensive end, Ben Hammond picking up the loose ball for a Cardinals possession. Fisher with a scoring opportunity converts to make it 13-10, Seaman with the goal, assisted by Lane Edinger. With 10:41 left in regulation, Seaman gets it to Mason who goes hard to cage and puts it away giving Fisher a 14-10 lead. Ithaca answers back to cut the lead to 14-12. Mason with his second straight for Fisher brings it to 15-12, assisted by Salit. Mason once again puts one away, his fourth of the night and third straight to bring the score to 16-13. As time ran down, the Cardinals held on and won by a 16-14 final score.
Mason and Salit both recorded five points on the day, Mason with four goals, one assist and two ground balls. Salit with one goal, four assists, and one ground ball. Seaman finished with one goal and three assists and Kemmis with three goals, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Zach Mitrano leading on the defensive end with four ground balls and three ground balls.
Up next for the Cardinals, the team will host Nazareth College on Saturday, April 29 for Senior Day and their last regular season game. The Empire 8 match up is set for 1pm.
