PITTSFORD, NY – On a Monday night matchup, the No. 8 St. John Fisher Cardinals (15-5) topped the Medaille Mavericks (5-12), in three (25-15, 25-19, 25-16).
The Cardinals started strong, opening with a 10-2 run in the first set. The compelling first set lead would expand to double digits, up 19-9, using three aces to back the lead. The Mavericks would take their first time out of the set down 21-9, and would cap the first set victory on a service error from the Mavericks, winning 25-15.
Over 17 attempts in the first, Fisher hit 0.471% using nine kills to back their offensive performance.
In the second set, the Cardinals continued the onslaught, opening an 8-2 edge, forcing Medaille to take their first time out. The strong performance carried throughout, with the edge widening to as many as nine in the set, with Fisher using four kills on four attempts from
Ian Rauh to propel their offense to the 25-19 victory.
The third set opened with three more kills from Rauh, but the Mavericks found early success and would take their first lead of the day, up 4-3. The lead would expand to two, up 11-9, but the Cardinals used four service aces from
Gavin Newman to take back control, 18-11. The Cardinals would end the contest on a kill from
Tyler Cohen, ending the third set 25-16.
Pacing the Cardinals was Rauh whose eight kill performance moves the middle to a 0.558% percentage this season (46 kills, eight errors, 68 attempts). The Cardinals relied heavily on the serve, using a career-best nine ace performance from Newman. The nine aces surpasses a previous career high of seven, set in a three-set win over Hilbert on Jan. 15, 2022.
As a team, Fisher hit 0.362, using 35 kills to just 10 errors across 69 attempts to get past the Mavericks.
The Cardinals will hit the road later this week, as they get prepare to compete at Endicott College on Thursday, March 9 before seeking redemption in the UVC standings at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 11.
