SWARTHMORE, PA – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team competed in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Cardinals faced off against the host team, Swarthmore College, and fell by a final score of 101-78.
The Cardinals got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-0 in the early portions of the game.
Connor Recore scored the first points of the game with a three-pointer and the rest of the Fisher offense began to come together.
Daniel Cook added a three-point play to bring the score to 10-6 moments later. The Cardinals were able to fend off a few different Garnet runs, thanks to layups by
Brendan McRoy, Cook and
Eric Kegler. As the half began to come to an end, McRoy made a pair of free throws that were followed by layups by Cook and Recore to make the score 52-39 at the break.
Cole Thompson scored a layup three minutes into the second half to open the scoring for the Cardinals and to the run by Swarthmore. As the half progressed, Cook was able to use his abilities in the post to knock in a couple of layups, including a three-point play. With 12:38 to play, McRoy made a mid-range jumper to cut the team's deficit to 16 and force a timeout by the opponent. Recore knocked in a layup to bring the score to 68-55 before the Garnet began their scoring run. As the game progressed, Fisher tried to match the opposition scoring, but were unable to make a comeback and fell by a final score of 101-78.
McRoy had a tremendous game, scoring 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field and grabbed four rebounds. Cook tallied 19 points, six assists and seven rebounds.
