ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 25 St. John Fisher University women's softball team (7-5) were unable to counter the offense of the University of Rochester Yellowjackets (9-5), dropping both in a mid-week doubleheader against the Rochester rival. Fisher has now lost six straight against the University of Rochester, dating back to May 2021.
Yellowjackets 10, Cardinals 3
The Yellowjackets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead courtesy of a two-run home run in the bottom of the first off starting pitcher
Jessica Patterson. Over the next two innings, Patterson was able to settle down, scattering two hits and allowing her offense to get on track.
The Cardinals would answer in the top the fourth by capitalizing on miscues on the Yellowjackets, plating two unanswered before
Amalia DeMartino singled up the middle for her third RBI of the season.
After a key defensive stop ended the top half, the Yellowjackets would use the momentum to tack on three runs on three hits, retaking a 5-3 lead. After a scoreless top of the fifth, the Yellowjackets would pummel the Cardinals, using four hits to pace a four-run bottom of the fifth inning, extending the deficit to 9-3. Another run would score in the bottom of the sixth, moving the score to 10-3.
Fisher was unable to find much offensively after their three run fourth inning, being held to just two hits over the next three innings. The Cardinals would end the first game scoring three runs on eight hits.
Patterson was dealt her second loss of the season after allowing seven earned across 4.1 innings pitched, walking three and striking out four.
Cassidy Ormond was called on in relief of Patterson, as the sophomore ended her line with 1.2 innings pitched, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned).
Yellowjackets 4, Cardinals 0
In similar fashion to the first game, the Yellowjackets took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Fisher would look to respond in the top of the second, but with runners on the corners and two outs, the Cardinals could not capitalize.
The score would remain a one run difference heading into the bottom of the fourth, but a solo home run from the Yellowjackets doubled their lead to 2-0.
The Cardinals would have their best opportunity to score in the top of the sixth, as with one out,
Clare Boegel walked and
Mari Spitz doubled to put both runners in scoring position. The Yellowjackets would be able to escape unscathed, using a shall fly and ground out to dash the Cardinals hopes.
The lead would jump to 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth on a two run home run. Fisher was held to just four hits in the loss and will look to rebound next week.
Evanteski continued to pitch well for the Cardinals, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five. With the loss, Evanteski moves to a 2-3 record on the season.
The Cardinals are set for their home opener next Wednesday, as they welcome their RIT Tigers for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
