Weekly Preview: Women’s Lacrosse Faces No. 15 SUNY Cortland on Wednesday

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team is set to travel to Cortland, N.Y and compete against SUNY Cortland on Wednesday, March 22 at 3:45pm. The Cardinals begin the week having won the last three games and hold a 4-1 overall record. The Red Dragons head into the game with a 3-2 record on the season.

Last Match-Ups

The two teams have competed almost every season since 2014. The Cardinals have won three of the seven match ups against the Red Dragons. The most recent game was played on April 6 during the 2022 season in Pittsford, N.Y. Fisher was leading at halftime 6-5, and heading into the third quarter the teams were tied at eight a piece. During the fourth quarter, the Red Dragons tallied four goals, while the Cardinals could not capitalize on any opportunity. At the end of regulation, Cortland came out on top by a 12-8 final score.

Cara Landry and Courtney O'Dea both recorded two goals during this match up, while Lauren Swartz and Farrah Zalla chipped in one a piece. Fisher looks to pick up their fourth win against the Red Dragons on Wednesday afternoon.

Players to Watch

Lilly Goodsell was named Empire 8 Women's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week this past week for the second week in a row. Goodsell had 13 saves on 24 shots in the team's two wins over SUNY Oswego and the University of Scranton last week. She had an overall .542 save percentage between the two wins. She had eight saves in the teams 13-6 win over the Lakers on 3/15 and on 3/18 she had five saves in a 7-5 win against the Royals.

Sydney Carpenter had a stand out performance against the Lakers last Wednesday. She recorded three goals and two assists for five points to lead the team on the offensive end. She also recorded a season high of 18 draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover to lead the team to victory. On the defensive end, Maddie Lowney recorded a combined eight ground balls and four caused turnovers in the two games last week.
