Week Preview: Men’s Basketball Looks to Keep Win Streak Alive

PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team is set to host their last regular season home game on Tuesday, February 7 against Utica University. The Empire 8 match-up it set to start at 7:30pm. On Saturday, February 11, the team will travel down the road and take on Nazareth College; tip-off is set for 7pm. The Cardinals hold an overall record of 15-6, and are 11-3 in conference play.

Scouting the Opponents

The Cardinals last saw the Pioneers in Utica on Jan. 3, the team fell short by a score of 69-75.

Daniel Cook lead the team that night with 19 points and seven rebounds, Jack Foley with 14 points and three steals. Fisher looks to come back from the loss with more experience and break the Pioneers 11 game win streak. The Pioneers stand at 18-2 on the season and are 13-0 in conference play.

On Saturday, February 11, the team will compete in the second battle of the beaks away at Nazareth College. The last match up between these two teams was home on January 24. Fisher came out on top after being down by three at halftime. The final score was Fisher 70 Nazareth 67. Ryan Gentile lead the way that game with 16 points and three assists, Connor Recore right behind with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Cardinals look to secure their second win over the Golden Flyers on Saturday night. Nazareth holds a record of 17-4, and are 11-3 in conference play.

Players to Watch

Cook is always a key player to watch in the forward position and looks to continue to help lead his team this upcoming week. On 1/31 against Keuka, he had 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals. On Friday against Medaille, he again contributed all over the court with seven points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. On Saturday, against Houghton, he took over and finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.

Recore has also been all over the score sheet the past few games in the forward position. On 1/31 against Keuka he led the team with 23 points and finished with eight rebounds. He then again led his team in points on 2/3 against Medaille with 13 and went 6-for-6 on his field goals.

Foley also added to the Cardinal success this past week in the Guard position. He had three consistent and solid games this past week. On 1/31 against Keuka, he tallied nine points, going 50% on field goals and went 100% on free throws. He added eight rebounds, and two assists. On 2/3 against Medaille, he had 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, one steal and went 3-for-5 on three point shots. To finish out his strong play for the week, on Saturday against Houghton he had 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal.
