Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 6 Fisher Drop to No. 12 NYU

BROOKLYN, NY – The No. 6 St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team (13-5) ended their weekend and the start of conference play 0-2 after losing Saturday at No. 12 New York University 3-0. The loss snaps a three-game win-streak the Cardinals maintained over the Violets.

While the first set started tied at 13-13, the Violets were able to pull ahead on 7-0 run that forced Fisher to use both timeouts. While Fisher scored out of the timeout, NYU was able to stifle the offense of the Cardinals, scoring six of the next eight points to take the first set by a 25-16 margin. From the tie 13-13, the Violets overall went on a 12-3 run to take the set.

Seeking a swing in momentum, the Cardinals started the second set strong, posting a 5-1 lead to start the set. The lead would jump to six, with the Cardinals up 13-7, but the Violets fought back to tie the set at 20-20. Now tied at 24-24, three Cardinal errors propelled the Violets to take the second set by a 27-25 margin.

After a defeating second set, the Cardinals kept the third set close initially, down 13-12. But much like the first set, NYU was able to rely on costly errors by the Cardinals and an offense that moved the ball around to go on a 8-1 run, which would only be stopped on three consecutive kills, including two from Josh Bigford and one from Matt Beiter.

Beiter, Gabe La Robardiere, and Jake Baker tied for the team lead in kills, with six. The team totaled 28 kills, the lowest number of kills in a single game this season. As a whole, Fisher hit just 0.112% in the loss, their second lowest mark this season as well, behind hitting a meager 0.110% in a 1/15 matchup against Stevens. The Cardinals finished with two aces and 11 service errors, with the two aces being tied for the second fewest in a contest this season (1/15 vs. St. Joseph's L.I, 1/21 vs. Misericordia).

Setter Gavin Newman finished with 17 assists and a service ace in the loss.

The Cardinals will return to Western New York with the hopes of rebounding from tough losses, heading to Hilbert College on Saturday, March 4 at noon before returning to face Medaille University at home on Monday, March 6.
