PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball are the no. 4 seed in the Empire 8 Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament and will host the no. 5 seed Hartwick College on Tuesday for a first round matchup.
Meetings This Season
In the first matchup of the campaign on Jan. 20, the Cardinals were able to come away with a dominant 100-67 win. Fisher had five players finish in double digit scoring, starting with
Daniel Cook and Connor Record who had 15 points each.
Brendan McRoy and
Connor Williams contributed 14 and 13 points respectively and
Ryan Gentile added 12 points of his own.
In the season finale, the two teams met again and Gentile led the way with 28 points on 7-for-9 shooting from three in a 77-65 victory for the Cardinals. Cook contributed just 10 points but he had three blocks, four assists and eight rebounds. They held the Hawks to 4-for-22 shooting from three and 36.8 percent from the field.
Cooking This Year
Senior forward,
Daniel Cook, has been the player of the year for the Cardinals. His 18.5 points per game is second most in the conference and his total of 445 points tops it. On the boards, he sits in second with 8.9 rebounds per game, with 86 offensive and 127 defensive. He ranks third in the Empire 8 with a 52.9 field goal percentage and is top-10 in blocks per game and steals per game.
Scouting The Hawks
Hartwick aim to play spoiler against the Cardinals. They average 70.6 points per game which is seventh in the conference, and they allow 78.3 points per game, which is eighth in the E8. Defensively, the team allows the highest field goal percentage to the opposition at 46.2 percent. The Hawks are middle of the pack in three points shooting, hitting 7.2 threes per game at a clip of 32 percent.
Looking Ahead
The semi-finals and finals of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday at Utica University. The no. 6 seed Medaille University and no. 3 seed Alfred University compete tonight in the other first round matchup. The Pioneers sit at the no. 1 seed and await the winner of the Cardinals, Hawks game.
