Women’s Basketball End Regular Season Undefeated in Empire 8 With Win Against Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team traveled to Oneonta, on Saturday, for their final regular season matchup against Hartwick College. A strong second quarter helped propel the Cardinals to a 64-36 victory. With this victory, Fisher moves to a record of 23-2 and a conference record of 18-0.

The first quarter started out slow, with Katie Moravec scoring a layup just over a minute into the game. Exactly a minute later, Ka. Moravec scored a free throw, the score 3-1. The next points of the game came three minutes later, with Kaitlyn Walker making two free throws. Ka. Moravec later scored a jumper and a layup and with Hartwick getting a last-minute layup, the quarter ended with fisher leading 14-5. Fisher came out fast in the second quarter, with Presleigh Brunner scoring an early three-pointer and a pull-up mid-range jumper. Shortly after, Sidney Tomasso got her first points of the match, with a driving layup. The teams went back and forth for a few minutes. Emily McLaughlin, Lauren Nawojski, and Brunner all scored down the stretch, with the half ending 31-17.

The second frame started with Tomasso scoring a three-pointer, followed by the two teams alternating points for a couple of minutes. Walker then scored a layup, starting a six-point streak for the Cardinals. The quarter ended with Fisher leading 49-27. The final quarter began with Walker scoring a good jumper. Nearly a minute later, Ka. Moravec scored a three-pointer. After a slow few minutes, Emilia Johnson scored a three-pointer, the score 59-27. Fisher's final point came from a good free throw made by Lauren Petrie, with the final score 64-36.

Leading in points for the Cardinals was Ka. Moravec, with 15, while also collecting four assists and one rebound. Brunner also had a strong game, scoring 13 points, six rebounds, and playing 28 minutes. Walker led in rebounds with 11, scoring nine points and collecting two assists. Kruszka led in assists with 5, while also collecting six rebounds and scoring three points.

The Cardinals begin their postseason on Friday, Feb. 24 as they host the Empire 8 Championship Semi-Finals for a 5:30 p.m. start at Manning & Napier Varsity Gym.
