Men’s Basketball Defeats Gators in Friday Night Match up

ALBANY, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University mens basketball team traveled to compete against Russell Sage on Friday night. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals came out on top by a final score of 93-66. The Cardinals overall record now stands at 17-7 and are 13-4 in conference play. The Gators fall to an overall record of 4-20 and are 2-15 in conference play.

Connor Recore got the scoring started for the game with a layup assisted by Ryan Gentile, giving Fisher the fast start. Cole Thompson was next to tally, sinking a three point shot, assisted by Jack Foley. Fisher continued the momentum off this early 5-0 lead. The Cardinals went on a quick six point run, started by Recore tallying two, Matt Lettko adding a dunk off his own steal and Brendan McRoy with a jump shot. This brought the score to 15-7 with 12:41 to go. Daniel Cook created a scoring opportunity with his defensive rebound, transitioning the ball to Foley who found Eric Kegler on the other end, converting on a lay up. With 6:16 to go, Foley took it end to end, giving the Cardinals their biggest lead of the half, 17 points. The Gators fought back, but Fisher held onto the lead. Akinlana Popoola hit a three with two seconds to go, to secure a 46-34 lead going into halftime for the Cardinals.

The Gators came out of halftime converting on two free throws to start the scoring. Recore answered right back, tallying two off an assist from Foley. Gentile added three points to the score, keeping the large lead for Fisher, 53-41. With 15:31 to go, Foley hit a three to start a 12-point scoring run for Fisher. Lettko was next with a three pointer, McRoy with four points and Recore adding two, bringing the score to 66-48. With 10:30 to go, Cook recorded a block, Lettko with the defensive rebound, getting the ball down to McRoy who converted with two points. The Cardinals created a gap the Gators could not seem to come back from. McRoy hit two three pointers in a row bringing the score to 81-54. Brad Fowler got on the board with his first points of the night bringing the Cardinals up by 30 with 5:16 to go. Connor Williams finished out the scoring for Fisher, his first of the night to bring the final score to 93-66, Cardinals on top.

McRoy finished leading the team with 14 points, six assists, three rebounds and went 6-for-9 on his field goal attempts. Cook right behind with 13 points, a team high of 12 rebounds, and three assists. Recore ended with 12 points, and five rebounds.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team competes on the road in their last regular season game on Saturday against Hartwick College. The Empire 8 match up is set to start at 4pm.
