Week Preview: Men’s Basketball Finish Regular Season On The Road

PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team is set to play their last two regular season games this coming weekend. First, they will travel to Albany N.Y. and compete against Russel Sage College on Friday, February 17. This matchup is set to start at 7:30pm. They will conclude the weekend at Hartwick College on Saturday, February 18, competing in their last regular season game. This match is set to tip off at 4pm. The Cardinals go into the weekend with an overall record of 16-7 and are 12-4 in conference play.

Scouting the Opponents

The Cardinals last saw the Gators on Jan. 21, playing at home in Manning and Napier gym. Fisher defeated Sage by a score of 80-71. Daniel Cook led the team with 28 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Jack Foley was also a key contributor, adding 13 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. The Gators hold an overall record of 4-19, and are 2-14 in conference play. The Cardinals look to defeat Russell Sage once again this upcoming Friday night.

On Saturday, the Cardinals will compete in their last regular season game against Hartwick College. These teams last saw each other on Jan. 20 in Pittsford, N.Y. Fisher defeated the Hawks by a final score of 100-67. Connor Recore and Cook both led the team with 15 points on the night. Cook adding eight rebounds, six assists, two blocks and one steal and Recore adding three rebounds and one block. Connor Williams finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and one assists. Fisher looks to finish out the regular season strong with a final road game win.

Players to Watch

Cook continues to be the player to watch. He leads his team in points this season, averaging 19.2 a game, and in rebounds averaging 8.8 a game. On 2/7 Cook led his team to a win and an upset over Utica University. He finished the night with a team high of 26 points, a team high of nine rebounds, and added three assists. He went 5-for-6 on his free throw attempts and went 10-for-16 from the field. On Saturday night the team competed against Nazareth College. Cook dominated and finished with 21 points, and 12 rebounds, both team highs of the night. He added five assists, 1 block and three steals. He went 2-for-2 on his free throw attempts and had the last four points of the game for Fisher. Cook looks to continue to lead the team to finish out regular season play.

Ryan Gentile leads the team in three points made with 34, averaging 3.4 a game this season. He was a key contributor in the upset over Utica University on Tuesday night. He finished with 13 points, three steals, three rebounds and two assists. He went 4-for-6 on his free throw attempts. He made crucial baskets throughout the game including two free throws to give the Cardinals a lead with 1:40 to go and the last basket to secure a Cardinals win. It was a season high of three steals for Gentile. On 2/11 against Nazareth College, Gentile finished the night with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Six rebounds was a season high for Gentile. He looks to head into the weekend carrying over the strong performances.
