PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team were at home to host the no. 5 seeded Alfred University in the Empire 8 Championship semi-final. The Cardinals were stunned at home by the Saxons, falling by a final of 3-1. It is the teams first loss to a conference opponent since 2018.
Fisher got off to a good start, jumping out to a 7-4 lead in the first set thanks to scores by
Reilly Morrow and
Olivia Nellis. The Saxons battled, but the Cardinals did a good job of keeping them multiple points behind with kills by Nellis,
Kaylene Noble and
Kristen McIntosh stopping runs from the opponent. Fisher held on to take the first set, 25-19.
In the second set, the Cardinals jumped out to a 9-3 lead and despite a Saxons run, still held an early 16-9 advantage. Alfred soared back, forcing a Fisher timeout with the score at 16-14 and a few points later the score was once again even at 19-19. A kill by Morrow and mistake by the Saxons moved the Cardinals in front 23-21, but Alfred tallied four straight points to claim the second send.
The third set was very tight with the two teams trading runs and remaining tied for most of the frame. With the score in favor of the Saxons at 20-19, the road team scored four straight points yet again to get control of the match and took the 2-1 lead with a 25-21 set three win. Despite taking an early 9-7 lead in the fourth set, Alfred used another run to claim an advantage they did not relinquish the rest of the way. The Cardinals dropped the frame 25-17 and the match, 3-1.
Noble led the way with 15 kills and 11 digs, with Young adding 11 of her own to go along with 16 digs. Morrow had seven kills and 42 assists.
