Cardinals Begin Season With Intense Matchup Against Hobart

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team began their season on Wednesday with a matchup against Hobart College at home. The intense matchup went down to the wire, but the Cardinals were unable to claim the victory, falling by a final score of 85-81.

Daniel Cook scored the first bucket of the season with a layup in the opening minute. Fisher used layups by Cook and Connor Williams to claim an early 15-10 lead, but the Statesman battled to even the score and take a lead of their own. The two teams began to trade buckets, with the Cardinals getting key scores from Brendan McRoy and Cook. However, as the first half concluded, Hobart held a 46-37 lead.

The offense woke up three minutes into the second frame, while facing a 54-39 deficit. Cole Thompson hit a three and then back-to-back layups by Jack Foley and Cook put Fisher down by double-digits. A couple of possessions later, Cook hit a jumper, followed by a Foley layup that made the score 54-51. Hobart got back on the board to cut off the Cardinal run. After some more back and forth, Fisher evens the score at 62-62 after an emphatic putback dunk by McRoy. The Cardinals were unable to maintain the momentum and push in front of the Statesmen and fell by a final score of 85-81.

McRoy had a strong start to the season, scoring 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field, 1-for-3 from three and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. He also added four assists and two rebounds. Cook continues to show his abilities, battling foul trouble to score 17 points, grab three rebounds, dish out three assists and swatting away four shots.

Up next for the Cardinals is the Penn State Harrisburg Tip-Off Tournament. Fisher will take on Lebanon Valley on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 6pm.
