PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 1 seeded St. John Fisher University field hockey team came up short against No. 2 seed Hartwick College on Saturday in the Empire 8 Championship, 2-1, at Growney Stadium.
The visiting Hawks jumped to a 2-0 lead with goals in the second and third quarter, and while the Cardinals were able to cut the lead in half on a third-period goal by junior
Sarah Woods, they couldn't get the equalizer.
Woods' goal, her first of the season, came in the 36th minute, as she got the ball past Hartwick defenders and into the goal shortly after a penalty corner play.
Freshman
Mary Kate McPhee was the most aggressive Cardinal on offense, taking four shots, including three shots on goal.
On the other side of the ball, senior goalkeeper
Sophia Trozzi made ten saves, while junior
Claire Dearie had a defensive save.
The loss was Fisher's first against a conference opponent since last season's Empire 8 Semi-Final against Houghton, and first defeat of any kind since they fell to SUNY Cortland on Oct. 15.
The Field Hockey NCAA Selection show is scheduled for Sunday night at 10:30pm.
