Wrestling Compete In W&J Invitational

WASHINGTON, PA – The St. John Fisher University wrestling team were in Pennsylvania on Saturday to compete in the W&J Invitational, hosted by Washington and Jefferson College.
 
Daniel Parkulo competed in the 125-pound weight class and took home a third-place finish. After a first round bye, he recorded a pin at 2:32 in his first match. He followed that with another pin at 3:34, before falling in the semi-final bout. In his third-place match, he defeated his opponent by a 17-2 technical fall to secure his position.­
 
Torin Bishop earned a fourth-place finish in the 149-pound weight class. After a first round bye, he defeated his first opponent by pin in just 1:10. The next round he won by aa 17-0 technical fall. After dropping the semi-final match, the Cardinal fell by major decision to take home fourth place.

Braydon Vandenberg was incredible in the 197-pound class, working his way to the final match and took second-place. He started the day with a 17-0 technical fall victory and followed that with a pin at 2:44. In his third match, he wonby a 6-1 final before advancing to take on Jaedyn Harris who is ranked no. 14 in 197 by NWCA for the final. The two went the distance and Vandenberg fell 5-3 to take second-place. 
 
In the 285-pound class, Jackson Burns secured fifth place. In his first competition he earned a 21-6 technical fall victory, before securing a 5-1 win in the second round. Despite stumbling in his third bout, he bounced back nicely, winning 9-2, then by pin fall in 4:49 and then 6-2 to secure fifth place.
 
Some other noticeable performances came from Carl Sentariello who went 2-2 on the day including major decision wins of 13-3 and 17-4 in the 125-pound class. Mason Welch had two wins by pinfall in the 133 class. Despite losing his first match of the day, Josh Maslyn won four straight matches and that had him competing for a chance at the top six. His first win was a pin fall at 1:02 and that was followed by an 8-3 win, 22-3 technical fall and 13-0 major decision.
 
Up next the Cardinals look ahead to the SUNYAC Championships hosted by RIT on Saturday, Nov. 18. The St. John Fisher wrestling program joined the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as associate members along with Ithaca, RIT and Utica beginning in 2023-24. The four new members join Brockport, Cortland, Oneonta and Oswego to make up the eight-team conference.
