UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University football team were on the road on Saturday to take on Empire 8 foe, Utica University, in the final game of the season. The two teams were scoreless for much of the game until two late Pioneer touchdowns put the Cardinals away 14-0. Fisher now hold a 5-5 overall record and are 2-4 in conference play.
The first quarter began with a turnover and a punt for each team. After an interception by
Aaron Chase, Jonathon Ellison recovered a fumble at the Cardinal 21-yard line. Neither team was able to convert on the opportunities and went into the second quarter scoreless. The offensive drought continued with each team punting until Utica began driving in the final minute of the game. However, a sack by Zach Driesbach stopped the momentum and kept the score at 0-0 at the break.
Coming out halftime, the Cardinals forced another punt and Fisher drove down to the Utica 36 yard line thanks to two big rushes by Chase. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert on a 4
th-and-2 and turned the ball over on downs. Fisher earned another opportunity thanks to an interception by
DeAndre Green and they used 11 plays to go 53 yards to set up a 39 yard field goal attempt. The attempt by
Logan Laratta missed wide and the score stayed at 0-0.
The following drive, the Cardinals forced another punt but
Ryan Romagnoli fumbled the ball and the Pioneers recovered at the Fisher 21 yard line. Utica capitalized on the error and scored the first points of the day. After a Cardinals punt the Pioneers once again drove down the field, going 82 yards on six plays to make the score 14-0. Fisher was unable to get the offense going to make the comeback.
