Weekly Preview: Women’s Volleyball Play Four Matches, Including One At Home

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team aim to get back to .500 as they play four matches this week. They hold a 7-8 overall record and are 2-0 in conference. The Cardinals are on a three-game win streak after knocking off Alfred University and Elmira College last week.
 
The Schedule: The slate of games begins with a road matchup at Nazareth University on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. The team then returns home for a Friday night contest against Buffalo State at 6 p.m. before heading back on the road on Saturday, Oct. 7 for matches against University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg and Wells College.
 
Battle of the Beaks: The Golden Flyers have a 5-9 overall mark and are 2-0 in Empire 8 play. The Cardinals have dominated their cross-town rivals of late, winning seven straight matches and dropping just five sets in that time. Naz are led by junior, Tessa Grover, who in 14 matches has tallied 173 kills, 179 assists and 110 digs. The team also have a winning streak of their own, recording four straight victories.
 
Bengals Come To Town: Buffalo State are in the middle of a good year, going 11-7 overall and 1-1 in conference. They were on a six game in streak before dropping their previous game against SUNY New Paltz and will battle Fredonia before coming to Fisher. Buff State are led offensively by first-year outside hitter, Ella Wittman. In 18 matches, she has 217.0 points on 186 kills and defensively leads the team with 175 digs.
 
Journey To Wells: The Cardinals will travel to Wells College on Saturday to take on the Express and the Bobcats of Pitt-Greensburgh. The Bobcats are 3-12 on the year and are on a five game losing streak before heading into their contest on Tuesday. Wells hold a similar record to Fisher (7-8) before their match on Tuesday.
 
Young and Comfortable: The Cardinals are getting impact performances from four underclassmen, including two first year players. Kaylene Noble and Ana Gutman both have over 100 kills so far this season and both have earned conference Rookie of the Year honors. Gutman also leads the team and the conference with 47 total blocks. Second-year players Kiera Hartpence and Reilly Morrow have had strong years, with Hartpence leading the team and conference in total digs with 231 and Morrow setting up the offense with 433 assists.
