HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team traveled to Houghton University on Friday night for an Empire 8 match up. The Cardinals held the lead and won after 40 minutes of play by a final score of 91-56. The Cardinals now hold a record of 6-5, and are now 2-2 in conference play. The Highlanders fall to 2-8 on the season and are 1-3 in conference play.
Brendan Trapper got the scoring started for the Cardinals, finishing on his first three point shot of the game. Ryan Gentile tied the game up at 7-7 off a defensive rebound by Trapper who transitioned the ball, allowing Gentile to go hard to the basket. Trapper came out strong and took it end to end off a steal ending in a dunk. The Highlanders kept the game close, but the Cardinals completely took the momentum at the eight-minute mark. Brad Fowler pushed the lead up to ten on a layup that was assisted by Jack Foley and the Cardinals never looked back. Eric Kegler converted on his two free throw attempts to put the team up by 14. Gentile, Brendan McRoy, Joe Morrell and Akinlana Popoola all made free throw attempts in the last two minutes to add to the overall first half success. The Cardinals had 11 different players tally points and going into halftime the Cardinals were leading by a score of 47-24.
Fisher picked up where they left off as the second half began. Foley sunk a three point shot off an assist from Daniel Cook. Cook kept the momentum rolling creating his own success with a steal, followed by a layup. The Highlanders tried to chip away at the deficit but Fisher stayed consistent and never led up. Connor Recore tallied two for the Cardinals in the second half off a defensive rebound by Kegler leading to Recore's layup. Jackson Sullivan finished a three-point opportunity and this brought the score to 78-47 with seven minutes left in the game. The Cardinals kept the pace of the offense for the rest of the second half, their entire 17 man roster chipped in and tallied points, bringing the final score to 91-56.
Trapper led the way finishing with 15 points on the night. He added three steals, one assist and four rebounds. Cook finished the night with 12 points, three steals, three assists, and led the way with six rebounds. Gentile finished with 12 points, two steals, and four rebounds.
Up next for the Cardinals, they will travel to Buffalo, NY on Saturday, January 7, to compete against Medaille University. The Empire 8 matchup is set to start at 4pm.
