ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team was on the road on Saturday, as they traveled to Alfred University for an early afternoon battle. The Cardinals were able to claim the 72-45 victory despite an early first quarter deficit. The win moves Fisher's record to 16-2 overall and 11-0 in Empire 8 conference play, while the Saxons fall to 10-8 on the year and 5-7 against conference opponents.
The first quarter started off slow for the Cardinals, quickly falling behind 13-4 with 4:27 on the clock.
Presleigh Brunner stopped the run with a three-pointer, and jump shots by
Sidney Tomasso and
Claire Kruszka cut the deficit to four as the quarter concluded. Fisher worked hard in the second to reclaim the lead. They got to within one point thanks to baskets by Tomasso and
Kaitlyn Walker, but it was
Katie Moravec that finally got the team in front at the 6:30 mark, using a jumper to put the score at 20-19. From that point forward, the team finished the half on a 12-3 run, thanks to scores by Ka. Moravec, Kruszka and Tomasso, and Fisher went into the break with a 32-22 advantage.
In the second half, the Cardinals began to expand their lead starting with a Tomasso three pointer that pushed them ahead by 12. Later in the third, a three-point play by Tomasso and jumper by Brunner put Fisher in front 44-28. The lead reached 21 with 3:06 to play when
Ashley Pavan knocked down a jump shot. The team went into the final frame in front 55-31. The fourth quarter was filled with both team trading baskets and the Cardinals outscoring the Saxons 17-14 to wrap up the game. When the final horn sounded, Fisher was able to walk away with the 72-45 win.
Tomasso led the way with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 from three. She also collected seven rebounds, one assist and one block. Brunner shot 5-for-10 from the field to tally 13 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Ka. Moravec and Kruszka each finishing with double-digit scoring, recording 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Cardinals remain on the road for their next contest. They travel to Keuka College on Tuesday, Jan. 31 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. Fisher will return home on Friday, Feb. 3 as the team will host Medaille College at home at 5:30 p.m.
