Cardinals Hold On At Home To Defeat Wolves

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team hosted Keuka College on Tuesday night for an Empire 8 match up. After a 40 minute battle, the Cardinals won by a score of 101-89. The Cardinals now hold an overall record of 8-5, and is now 4-2 in conference play. The Wolves fall to an overall record of 5-5 and is 1-4 in conference play.

The Cardinals came out fast at the start of the first half. Brendan Trapper tallied the first points of the game, sinking a three point shot, assisted by Daniel Cook. Trapper followed with the next seven points for Fisher, with assists from Cook and Sean Williams. Trapper brought the team to an early 10-6 lead. Throughout the first half the Cardinals played strong and never gave up the lead. Jack Foley finished on a three point shot with 8:20 left assisted by Connor Williams, to add to the momentum, bringing the score to 31-17. As time ran out, Cook tallied the last four points for Fisher, assisted by S. Williams and Ryan Gentile. Going into halftime the Cardinals led with a score of 50-29.

As the second half began, Cook started the scoring out for the Cardinals, finishing on a layup assisted by Gentile. S. Williams brought the score to 63-40 with a three point shot, assisted by Trapper with 17 minutes to go. Joe Morrell converted on a layup off his own offensive rebound to bring the Cardinals led up by 24, their largest lead of the night. The Wolves started to slowly chip away at the large score gap Fisher had built. Trapper added nine more points in the next four minutes to keep the Cardinals up. With three minutes left the Wolves cut the Cardinals lead to 10. Gentile answered back with a three point shot conversion assisted by Foley. The Cardinals went 8-for-8 on their last eight foul shots taken to win by a score of 101-89 after a 40-minute battle.

Trapper led the team in points with 27, he added two assist, four rebounds, one block and he went 11-for-12 on his field goals and 80% on his three points shots. Cook followed right behind with 22 points, a team high of 14 rebounds, one steal, one block and he went 10-for-16 on field goals. Foley ended the night with 14 points, three rebounds, one steal and went 3-for-5 on his three point shots. S. Williams, Gentile and Cook all shot 100% from the free throw line.

Up next for the Cardinals, they will host Hartwick College on Friday, Jan. 20th. This Empire 8 match up is set to start at 7:30pm.
