Career Nights From Leaty, Young Highlight Dominating Win Over Russell Sage

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team (8-4, 3-0 Empire 8) defeated Russell Sage College (4-13, 1-2 Empire 8) Friday night. Fisher put the Gators away in three sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-12. With the win, Fisher has won four straight games and has not dropped a set since their loss to the University of Mount Union on Sep. 17.

Katie Leaty, tabbed this week's player to watch, continues to pace the Cardinals in assists, adding 17 in the three-set performance. Leaty now sits at 1430 assists, continuing to approach Bridget Martin 92', who is ranked 9th in program history with 1500 assists. The strong performance from Leaty was also backed by six aces, the third time Leaty has 5+ aces in her storied career and first this season.

After the first set started 6-6, Fisher regained control by going on an 8-2 run, which included back-to-back service aces from junior Delayne Young. Young, who finished with six aces on the night compared to just one error, ties her season high in aces with her Sept. 16 performance against Lasell. This marks just the third time the junior has 5+ aces in a single game, all of which have come this season.

Fisher wrapped up the first set on a kill from sophomore Kristen McInosh, part of a seven-kill performance. The Cardinals hit .250 in the first set, compared to Sage, who finished hitting .034. The offense from Fisher picked up in the second set, as the Cardinals opened up a 14-7 lead. McIntosh put the second set away as well, as the Cardinals claimed set two. Fisher opened a twelve point gap at 22-10, icing the third set by a final of 25-12.

Senior Sydney French paced the Cardinals with eight kills, hitting .571. First year Kiera Heartpence tallied four aces and 11 digs in the win.
The 17 aces in the game mark the second time the Cardinals have accomplished the feat this season, doing so Sept. 16 against Lasell.

The Cardinals will return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. with a highly anticipated matchup against Empire 8 challenger Hartwick College (11-3, 3-0 Empire 8) in the Manning & Napier Varsity Gym at St. John Fisher University.
