PITTSOFRD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team will play three games this week, all of which will be Empire 8 conference games. The Cardinals will play at Keuka on Wednesday before returning to the Manning & Napier Varsity Gym for games against Russell Sage on Friday night and Hartwick on Saturday.
The Cardinals open the week with a 6-4 overall record and a 1-0 record in Empire 8 games. After three-set victories over both Cortland and Utica, the Cardinals are riding a two game win streak.
LET'S REVIEW: Senior Lindsey Debonis was named the player of the week to watch last week. Debonis finished last week's game with 10 kills to only one error, good for a hitting percentage of .667. The outside hitter has 2.69 points per set, second on the team to
Delayne Young, who is averaging 3.43 points per set.
Look for the senior outside hitter to continue her offensive success this week.
LAST TIME THEY MET: Last season, Fisher dominated Keuka in three sets, behind a big game from
Sydney French who finished with 11 kills, seven digs, two aces, and a block.
When Russell Sage took on the Cardinals last year, 34 assists from setter
Katie Leaty propelled the Cardinals to victory.
Fisher has taken seven in a row from Hartwick College, who took five sets for Fisher to finish off last season. The Cardinals won the first set 25-12, but dropped sets two and three by a score of 25-22. Fisher would rebound in the fourth set, winning 25-19 and then finished off Hartwick with a 15-11 score in the fifth set. Debonis finished last year's game with 15 kills and 25 digs, while Leaty had a career-high 53 assists in the win.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Graduate student,
Katie Leaty, is the player to watch this week. An often overlooked strategy in the sophistication of offensive plays is the sets. Leaty has 268 assists on the season, good for an average of 7.4 assists per set. This mark is good for second in her collegiate career behind just last season, when Leaty averaged 9.41 assists per set.
Last week, Leaty had 14 assists in the win over Utica. The setter added a service ace too, marking six straight games with an ace.
