PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team were at home on Sunday, welcoming Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to Growney Stadium. After a battle in the rain, the Cardinals fell by a final score of 3-0. The results moves Fishers record to 1-6, and the Engineers now sit at 5-4 on the year.
Gianna Palma took the team's first chance of the day at the 3:19 mark, taking a penalty corner pass from
Audrey Grieb and firing it on target. The RPI goalie was in position to make the save and kept the Cardinals off the board. As the first quarter ended,
Emma Cooper and Same Choate both fired shots at the goal, but either a defender or a goalie got in the way to keep the ball away from the goal. Palma took another shot in the second quarter, but it went just wide and the team went into the break, down 2-0.
In the second half, the Cardinals continued to take their opportunities on offense.
Molly Fisher had an opportunity at the 34:43 mark, but her shot went wide of the goal. In the fourth quarter, Palma and Grieb both took chances that were saved by the RPI goalkeeper. In total, the Cardinals had seven shots, five on target.
Sophia Trozzi was in goal for Fisher and she tallied nine saves in 60 minutes of action.
Up next for the team is an Empire 8 showdown at Nazareth College. The match is a late start as it is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
