ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 3 seeded St. John Fisher College men's tennis team had its season ended on Friday evening as they were outmatched by No. 2 seeded Nazareth College, 5-3, in the opening round of the Empire 8 Championships at Annette Shapiro Courts.
In the opening match of doubles play, Fisher's
Jordan O'Connell and
Anthony Molosag were defeated 8-4, before
Jake Anthony and
Sean Danahy earned the Cardinals their first point after winning their match 8-6.
With the match tied 1-1, Nazareth closed out the final round of doubles play with a win over
Cameron Campbell and
Zach DeCaro, 8-2.
Trailing by one point entering singles play, Danahy would tie the match up at 2-2 after a 6-4, 6-4 match win.
From there, Nazareth would take two back as Molosag and
Kyle Gorman would each fall in their matches to regain a 4-2 edge.
The Cardinals attempted to rally back as Anthony won the fourth match of singles play, 6-2, 6-1, cutting the Golden Flyers lead to one.
The comeback would fall short as O'Connell would end his match unfinished, 6-3, 6-4, UF, followed by Campbell losing the final match of singles play, 6-0, 6-1, giving Nazareth a 5-3 match win.
The Cardinals finish their season with a final record of 6-10, while Nazareth will play top-seeded Houghton College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
