PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's tennis had its senior day spoiled on Tuesday as the Cardinals battled Nazareth College to the final point before falling, 5-4, in an Empire 8 pairing at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club. With the loss, the Cardinals slipped to 4-8 on the year and 2-3 in the league standings while the Golden Flyers improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8.
Prior to the match, Fisher honored and thanked the four members of the team's graduating classes including seniors
Kyle Gorman,
Cameron Campbell and
Andrew Cegielski along with graduate student
Jordan O'Connell.
Fisher got off to a strong start in tandem play after taking two of three points. After falling in first doubles,
Sean Danahy and Campbell earned an 8-2 win in the second flight before
Zach DeCaro and Gorman teamed up for an 8-1 win at third doubles.
Leading 2-1 heading into singles competition, Fisher needed to lock up three of six flights to win the match.
After nearly forcing a third set at first singles, Fisher picked up a win at third singles when Gorman pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 decision. O'Connell followed suit at fourth singles after winning his matchup, 6-1, 6-0, but the Golden Flyers drew even after winning points at second and fifth singles to even the match at 4-4.
In sixth singles, DeCaro won the first set, 6-1, before falling in the second 6-3. With a third and deciding frame left to be played, Nazareth would forge ahead and won the match behind a 7-4 score in the third set.
The Cardinals will look to inch closer to securing a postseason berth at 2 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Houghton College to take on the Highlanders in another Empire 8 competition.
