Teska, Dunlap Throw Complete Games; Norsen Drives in 12 as Baseball Takes Two Against Elmira

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Alec Teska and Russell Dunlap each threw a complete game on Friday and Brian Norsen drove in 12 combined runs as the St. John Fisher College baseball team pushed its winning streak to four games after sweeping the Elmira College Soaring Eagles in an Empire 8 doubleheader at Dugan Yard.  With its wins, Fisher improved to 17-10 and 9-1 in the league standings while the visitors fell to 8-14-1, 4-5-1, respectively.

FISHER 20, ELMIRA 1 (Five Innings)

After setting the Soaring Eagles down in order to begin the game, Fisher's bats stayed hot in the home half of the inning as Ben Lavery smacked a two-run homer to left as part of a three-run inning.

Elmira would get one back in the second inning, but was unable to get off the field quickly in the bottom of the third as Fisher plated seven runs on four hits to open up a 10-1 advantage.  Lavery began the inning with a walk before Michael Beimel and Nick Lemire followed suit with walks of their own to load the bases.  With the Soaring Eagles in a jam, Ethan Perry was plunked by a pitch to force in a run before Luke Duffy singled through the right side to score a pair.  From there, Norsen stepped in and crushed a three-run shot to left before Noah Campanelli groundout out with a runner at third to cap the scoring.

Already leading by nine in the fourth, Fisher continued to rake with Norsen driving in two more runs with a single to left.  With a pair of runs already in, Jimmy McCardle doubled down the right field line to score Duffy before Campanelli cleared the bases with a two-run single that made it 16-1.

In the fifth inning, Fisher tacked on four more runs with Norsen belting his second home run of the game while Beimel drove in the team's 20th run with a single to left before the game was called due to rain.

In all, Fisher had 13 hits with Norsen going 3-for-4 with a pair of homers, a season-high seven RBI and three runs scored.  Lavery was 2-for-3 and clubbed his third dinger in his last three games while James Murphy had two hits in three at-bats including a double, an RBI and a walk.

Teska continued his tear through the Empire 8 after throwing his third straight complete game.  The senior, who has allowed one unearned run over his last 19.0 innings, pitched five frames on Friday and finished with three strikeouts.

FISHER 16, ELMIRA 2 (Seven Innings)

The nightcap began in the same fashion as the opener with Dunlap setting down the side in order before Lavery stepped in with a man on and drilled another two-run home run to stake the Cardinals to an early lead.

Trailing by two in the second inning, Elmira scored a pair of runs on two hits, but would surrender five runs in the bottom of the third including a three-run bomb from Lemire to make it 7-2 heading to the fourth.

After stranding a runner in top of the frame, Elmira was unable to hold Fisher at bay in the home half of the fourth with the Cardinals pushing five more runs across the plate.  After loading the bases with three consecutive walks, Fisher put two runs on the board when Murphy singled through the left side to score Lavery and Beimel.  Two batters later, Norsen drove in a pair before McCardle singled home a run to make it 12-2.

Holding a 10-run cushion, Fisher struck again in the bottom of the sixth with Norsen driving in his 11th and 12th RBI of the afternoon to give Fisher the 16-2 decision.

Dunlap improved to 4-1 with the win after going seven strong innings where he allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits.  The sophomore finished with five strikeouts on his line.

Norsen was 2-for-4 with five more RBI in the win while McCardle had two hits in five at-bats including his second triple of the day.  Lavery homered for the fourth time in his last four games and Adam Riter drove in a pair with a double.

The Cardinals and Soaring Eagles will meet again beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday when the two teams play in another Empire 8 doubleheader at Corning Community College.
