PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team ran its winning streak to six games on Wednesday after outscoring Elmira College, 29-4, over two Empire 8 games played at Dugan Yard. With the win, the Cardinals, who played as the visiting team, improved to 19-10 and inched closer to clinching a postseason berth after moving to 11-1 in the league standings. Elmira finished the doubleheader at 8-16-1, 4-7-1, respectively.
FISHER 15, ELMIRA 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
After swapping zeroes over the first three innings, Fisher got on the board in the top of the fourth with five runs on three hits.
James Murphy led off with a walk and moved into scoring position when
Luke Duffy followed suit with a free pass of his own. With two on and no outs,
Brian Norsen stayed hot and drove in a run with a single that made it 1-0. After scoring another run on a wild pitch, Fisher tacked on to its lead as
Jimmy McCardle, who was named the Empire 8's Rookie of the Week on Monday, blooped an RBI-single behind the shortstop before
Michael Beimel stepped in and ripped a two-run single the opposite way to give the Cardinals a five-run cushion.
With five runs already on the board, Fisher added to its lead in the top of the fifth with 10 runs on just two hits including a two-run blast from McCardle. In all, the Cardinals sent 15 hitters to the dish in the inning and drew six walks and one had one hit by pitch with the bases loaded before the Soaring Eagles could retire the side.
Holding a 15-0 lead, Fisher gave up two singles in the bottom of the fifth before closing the door on the team's fifth shutout of the year.
Beimel was 3-for-4 in the win with two RBI and a walk while McCardle was 2-for-3 with a career-high four RBI and three runs scored.
Noah Campanelli and Norsen each had a hit and an RBI while
Nick Lemire,
Ben Lavery,
Jack Kelleher, Murphy and Duffy each drove in a run in the win.
Connor McHugh moved to 4-1 with the win after allowing just one hit over three innings. The lefty finished with four strikeouts before being lifted in the fourth for
Tim Geissel who pitched two scoreless innings.
FISHER 14, ELMIRA 4
The Cardinals were first to score after Campanelli was plunked with the bases loaded to give Fisher a 1-0 lead in the second.
After a scoreless third inning, Fisher struck again in fourth with two runs on one hit including an RBI double to right off Campanelli's bat before a wild pitch with the bases loaded made it 3-0 heading to the fifth.
Leading by three, the Cardinals doubled their score in the top of the sixth with three more runs on three hits with Lavery, Beimel and Lemire each driving in a run before the side was retired.
In the seventh, Fisher blew the game wide open with seven more runs on six hits after batting around to hold a 13-0 edge.
Holding a large lead and needing three outs to close out the game, Fisher lost the strike zone and allowed four runs on just one hit to send the game into the eighth.
Still ahead by nine runs late in the game, Fisher tacked one another run in the top of the ninth when Norsen belted a solo home run before
Christian Maloney pitched the final three outs to complete the season sweep.
In all, the Cardinals totaled 17 hits in the win led by Beimel and Norsen who had three apiece. Murphy, Lavery, McCardle and Campanelli each had two hits in the win while
Jake Meeker, Lemire and
Ethan Perry had one hit each.
Michael Poirier opened the game and had two strikeouts over an inning of work.
Ryan O'Mara (4-0) earned the win after throwing four shutout innings including an immaculate second inning.
Conor Fitzgerald was tagged for two runs after yielding thee walks over an inning while
Logan Persse gave up two runs on one hit in an inning.
Cole Hedden and Maloney combined to throw two shutout frames down the stretch.
The Cardinals will look to extend their winning streak at 1 p.m. on Friday when they travel to Albany to take on the Russell Sage College Gators in an Empire 8 doubleheader.
