Softball Takes One In Conference DoubleHeader Over Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College softball team traveled down the road for a pair of Empire 8 contests against rival Nazareth College at Flyer Field. The Cardinals washed a pair of games to move their record to 10-14 overall, and 6-2 in the conference, while the Golden Flyers stand at 10-12 on the season, and 4-4 in the Empire 8.

FISHER 3, NAZARETH 4

A 1-2-3 inning by the Fisher offense, allowed Nazareth to put the first run on the board as freshman Cassidy Ormond let up two hits in the first inning.

From there, the Golden Flyers were able to extend their lead over the next two innings following a sacrifice fly and a pair of hits.

After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals came up to bat in the top of the fourth with a chance to close the gap. Allie Klonowski reaching on an error from the third baseman and a Mari Spitz walk, allowed the hot bat of Amalia DeMartino to come to the plate. The freshman short stop continued to produce as she ripped the ball up the middle to score Klonowski.

Looking to keep the momentum, Emma Smith, who has also been one of the Cardinals best bats, stepped to the plate and delivered another RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 3-2.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Cardinals offense found themselves with one out and no one on. Spitz hit a rocked down the line for a double, before DeMartino stepped up and poked the ball to right for a single. With runners on the corners, Smith came through again for another RBI single to right to tie the game up a 3-all.

As the game wore on, Ormond continued to keep the Golden Flyers offense at bay, forcing the game into extra innings. The Cardinals offense were unable to score, which opened the door for Nazareth to win the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, a leadoff single allowed Nazareth to play small with a sacrifice bunt, moving a runner into scoring position. A pair of singles resulted in the Golden Flyers to bring a runner home and walk-off game one, 4-3.

DeMartino led the way going 3-for-3 at the plate, followed by Smith with two hits and two RBI.

Ormond, who was on a three-game win streak, picked up the loss (4-5) after allowing four runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.

FISHER 3, NAZARETH 0

Looking to bounce back in game two, Ainsley Evanetski took the mound and was lights out with a no-hitter through five innings.

With Evanetski pitching a gem, the Cardinals offense took the first lead of the game after an Abby Flakus RBI single in the first, scoring DeMartino in the fifth.

Another shutout inning from Evanetski, allowed Fisher to extend its lead, as power hitter Klonowski hit a bomb over the left field fence. The Cardinals put together two more hits and loaded the bases with a chance to break the game open. The Golden Flyers limited the damage and got out of the inning to keep the game at 2-0.

As the game wore on, senior Allison Rogowski found her pitch and nuked a ball over the center field fence to extend the lead to three.

Evanetski took the mound in the bottom of the seventh for a chance to close the game. A single from Nazareth gave the home crowd hope, but it was short lived as the freshman produced a strikeout to end the game, 3-0, earning her third shutout of her career.

Homeruns from Rogowski and Klonowski led the offense from the Cardinals, while Smith notched two hits of her own.

Evanetski picked up her fifth win (5-3) after going seven innings, with five of them being no-hit. The Rochester native allowed just two hits and no runs with three strikeouts.

The Cardinals will have a week off before traveling to Fredonia to take on the Devils at 3 and 5 p.m. next Tuesday in a doubleheader.
