Fredonia Takes Two From Softball On Wednesday Afternoon

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Fredonia on Wednesday afternoon. With the losses, Fisher moves to 10-16 overall, while Fredonia improves to 9-19 on the season.

FISHER 4, FREDONIA 5

The Cardinals were hoping to take game one of the doubleheader with starting Ainsley Evanetski back on the mound. Evanetski got through the first inning 1-2-3, but gave up the first run of the game as Fredonia hit a homerun to score the games first run.

Trailing 1-0, Fisher opened the top of the fourth inning with a single from Amalia DeMartino. Mari Spitz followed this up with a single of her own to give Fisher an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead with Allie Klonowski coming up to bat. Klonowski was able to bring the run home with a fielder's choice, tying the game at 1.

Another shutdown inning from Evanetski in the bottom of the fourth, brought the Cardinals up to bat in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Marion Leskovar started a rally with a double before a DeMartino walk gave the Cardinals a chance to extend their lead.

Needing a big hit, Spitz produced with a two RBI single to give Fisher a 3-1 edge. Klonowski poured it on with an RBI single of her own to push the lead to three.

With two innings to go, Fredonia didn't go away easily, as Fisher brought in Jess Patterson to pitch, Fredonia brought two runners to the plate in the sixth inning behind three hits. Fisher had a chance to extend the lead in the seventh, but ended the inning with the bases loaded.

With their backs against the wall, the Devils came up to bat and walked off in the seventh inning behind two hits, including an RBI single to win the game.

Spitz led the way with three hits in the game, followed by Leskovar, and Klonowski with two hits apiece. Evanetski pitched five innings with one run and four strikeouts, while Patterson gets the loss (1-5) after 1.2 innings, and four runs with two strikeouts.

FISHER 4, FREDONIA 6

Opening game two, Cassidy Ormond took the mound for Fisher. In the bottom of the second inning, a pair of doubles from Fredonia put runners on second and third with no outs. A third-straight hit and an error from the Cardinals brought two Devils home, giving Fredonia an early 2-0 lead.

A scoreless third inning brought Fisher up to bat in the top of the fourth with a chance to close the gap. An Allison Rogowski one-out double followed by Klonowski reaching on an error brought the explosive bat of Spitz to the plate. Spitz once again delivered as she hit a rocket over the fence for a three-run homerun.

Holding a 3-2 lead, Fredonia would tie the game with a pair of hits followed by a sacrifice fly. The very next inning, Fredonia would put a three spot on the board with five hits in the inning, including two doubles and a triple.

A scoreless sixth inning brought around Fisher's last chance in the seventh inning. A leadoff single from Spitz opened the rally for the Cardinals.

From there, the Cardinals would load the bases with a single from Tori LoPresto. Maddie Donlin would cut the lead to two as she produced an RBI single, but Fredonia would find a third out to hold off the comeback and secure the sweep over the Cardinals.

Donlin tallied two hits and one RBI in the game, while Spitz and her homerun brought in three runs. Ormond pitched five innings and gets the loss (4-6) with six runs (five earned) and two strikeouts. Jenna Leydecker came in for the sixth inning and gave up no runs or hits with one strikeout.
