Cardinals Bounce Back As Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Oswego State

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College softball team split a pair of games against Oswego State Monday afternoon at the Laker Softball Field. After losing the first game, the Cardinals bounced back in the nightcap to improve the team's record to 9-13 on the season, while Oswego State moves to 6-15 overall.

FISHER 7, OSWEGO 8
After a first inning that saw the Lakers put a two-spot on the scoreboard, Fisher put a runner in scoring position following an Emma Smith hit-by-pitch and an Amalia DeMartino sacrifice bunt. Clare Boegel came to the plate with a chance to get a run back and delivered with a double to left field to score Smith.

Cutting the deficit to one run, Maddie Donlin came up to bat with an opportunity to tie the game. A line drive to the left side resulted in a single to the shortstop, putting runners on the corners. The Cardinals were able to tie the game up at 2-all following a sacrifice fly to right from Becca Irizarry.

As the game wore on, the Cardinals found a scoring opportunity in the fourth inning as a leadoff triple from DeMartino got things going. Another hard hit from Donlin resulted in an RBI single to give Fisher its first lead of the game at 3-2.

The lead would not last as the Lakers produced five runs in the bottom of the inning off five hits.

Following a scoreless 5th inning, the Cardinals found themselves with runners on second and third with one out and Donlin coming up to bat. Once again, the freshman put the ball in play and produced a sacrifice fly to right to cut the Lakers lead to 7-4.

Holding Oswego State scoreless in the 6th, the Cardinals found themselves down to their last out as Allie Klonowski came up to bat. With a runner on first, Klonowski hit a rocket to third for a single to keep the Cardinals alive. Smith to her stance in the box and ripped a two RBI double to right, cutting the Lakers lead to just one.

Freshman DeMartino came up to bat with a chance to tie the game and delivered a single to right to come all the way back from down 7-3.

Despite the comeback, the Lakers stayed composed and delivered three-straight hits in the bottom of the inning to walk-off, 8-7.

DeMartino and Donlin batted 1.000 on the day, while Smith produced two RBI and scored three runs.

Evanetski was the starting pitcher for the Cardinals and went four innings and allowed seven runs (six earned), and produced four strikeouts. Jenna Leydecker came out of the bullpen and took the loss (0-2) after giving up one run off four hits.

FISHER 6, OSWEGO 4

Looking to bounce back in game two, Klonowski delivered a two RBI single to give the Cardinals an early 2-0 lead. Cassidy Ormond took the mound for Fisher and delivered back-to-back 1-2-3 innings.

After an Abby Flakus sacrifice bunt, Mari Spitz came to bat and gave the Cardinals some insurance with an RBI single to right.

From there, the Lakers gave the Cardinals some help as a throwing error allowed Spitz to round third and score to extend the Cardinals lead to four

Keeping Oswego State scoreless through four, Fisher kept the momentum as a DeMartino double scored another run to take a 5-0 edge.

The Lakers were able to get four runs over the next two innings to cut the Cardinal lead to just one, before a Klonowski solo homerun in the top of the 6th pushed the lead back to 6-4.

Leydecker took the mound for the Cardinals and shut down the Lakers in the 7th to close out game two, 6-4.

Klonowski's three RBI led the way for Fisher, followed by two more hits from DeMartino.

Ormond earned her fourth win (4-4) after throwing five innings and allowing seven runs (four earned) with five strikeouts. Leydecker came in and closed out the game, allowing two runs over two innings.

The Cardinals will be back in action at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. as they travel to take on Nazareth on Tuesday in an Empire 8 showdown.
