Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 21 Women's Lacrosse Outlasted By No. 14 Brockport In Nationally-Ranked Showdown

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team fell short against No. 14 SUNY Brockport Saturday afternoon, 12-9, inside Growney Stadium. With the loss, Fisher, which is ranked 21st in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, moves to 1-4 on the season, while Brockport, which is ranked 14th in the same poll, improves to 3-2.

The Cardinal offense started off hot, as a failed clear attempt from the Golden Eagles led to a Sydney Carpenter goal less than two minutes into the game. Brockport got one right back before Brittany Halpin controlled the draw and bolted down the field for her ninth goal of the season.

Another Brockport goal would tie the match at 2-2 after a free position attempt by the Golden Eagles. Another successful draw control by the Cardinals allowed Halpin to find the back of the net to retake the lead.

A yellow card by Brockport opened the door to extend the Cardinal lead as Halpin pushed through the defense to earn a free position shot. After the whistle blew, Halpin lined up a shot and found the net for her third goal in just the first quarter. A scoreless final five minutes would end the quarter with the Cardinals leading 4-2.

A Brockport goal early in quarter two, would cut the Cardinal lead to one, before two goals from Courtney O'Dea and one from Kathleen Salanger would put Fisher up 7-3 with five minutes to play in the half. Brockport would not give up easily, creating two goals in the final three minutes to close the gap to 7-5 at the break.

The second half opened with a quick Sydney Carpenter goal, giving Fisher an 8-5 lead. The advantage would not last as Brockport would put together a 6-1 run to end the third quarter and take the lead with 15 minutes left in the game.

With Brockport leading 11-9, a defensive battle in the fourth quarter allowed the away team to take its time and run the clock out. Adding a goal to extend their lead, the No. 14 Golden Eagles would ultimately defeat No. 21 Fisher 12-9.

All-American Halpin led the offense with three goals, followed by Carpenter and O'Dea with two goals apiece. Halpin also caused four turnovers, while Carpenter won 10 draw controls.

The Cardinals will return to action at 4 p.m. om Wednesday as they travel to Geneva to take on William Smith College.
