Comeback Bid Falls Short as No. 21 Women's Lacrosse Downed by No. 18 Trinity

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse scored seven second half goals, but was unable to complete the comeback bid as the Cardinals fell to No. 18 Trinity College, in a non-conference tilt inside Growney Stadium.  With the loss, Fisher, which is ranked 21st in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, dipped to 1-3, while the Bantams improved to 4-2 to close out the day.

After spotting Trinity to an 8-0 lead following the first half of play, Fisher found its footing to begin the third quarter as Courtney O'Dea connected with Brittany Halpin for the Cardinals' first goal of the game.  From there, head coach Linda Michele's team found the back of the net two more times in a span of 70 seconds with O'Dea scoring and Mary Fiorentino securing her first-career goal to cut the gap to five with under 10 minutes remaining in the period.

Trailing 8-3 with time winding down, the momentum continued to swing in the home team's direction with Fiorentino threading a pass that O'Dea one-timed into the upper corner to make it a four-goal game.  From there, the Cardinals continued to keep the Bantams on their heels as O'Dea netted her second goal of the quarter to make it 8-5 heading into the final frame.

With just three goals separating the two teams and 15 minutes to go, both defenses turned up the intensity as neither team was able to break through until 12 minutes in when Halpin weaved her way through Trinity's back line before scoring with 3:49 still showing on the clock.

As the game wore on, Trinity would score its first goal in nearly 30 minutes to push its lead back to three, but the Cardinals countered down the stretch with Farrah Zalla scoring her first-career goal in the waning seconds to make it 9-7 as the final horn sounded.

O'Dea led Fisher with five points including three goals while Fiorentino had a goal and two assists along with two ground balls, one draw control and a caused turnover.  Halpin finished with two goals of her own while Eliza Runeare added six ground balls, and three caused turnovers.  Sydney Carpenter was credited with six draw controls and three ground balls in the loss.

In goal, Lilly Goodsell moved to 1-3 after allowing nine goals over 60 minutes of play.  She finished with seven saves.

The Cardinals will be back in action at 3 p.m. on Saturday when they host No. 14 SUNY Brockport at Growney Stadium.
