OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season on Wednesday as the Cardinals scored six second half goals en route to an 11-4 win over Oswego State at Laker Field. With the victory, Fisher, which is ranked 18th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, improved to 1-2 while the Lakers fell to 1-5 following the loss.
After falling behind by a goal following the first 15 minutes of play, the Cardinals found their footing in the second quarter with four unanswered tallies including two from
Brittany Halpin to hold a 5-2 edge with six minutes remaining before the break.
Leading by three, the Cardinals saw the advantage dip to two goals as the Lakers found the back of the net with 5:10 still showing on the clock, but head coach
Linda Michele's squad buckled down and held Oswego without a shot and forced its host into a pair of turnovers to take a 5-3 edge into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Fisher made all of the right adjustments as
Kathleen Salanger found Halpin for her third goal and a 6-3 edge before
Bianca Giacona made it a four-goal contest with a free position goal.
From there, the Cardinals took advantage of an extra player as Giacona scored her second goal of the game before
Courtney O'Dea threaded a pass to
Sydney Carpenter who buried a shot to give the visitors a 9-3 cushion heading into the final frame.
With 15 minutes left to play and a six-goal lead, Fisher's defense yielded its first goal in over 30 minutes as the Lakers pulled to within five with just under 10 minutes showing on the clock.
With time ticking down, the Cardinals continued to hold Oswego at bay, while at the other end, Salanger scored back-to-back goals in a span of 33 seconds to seal the win, 11-4.
Salanger led the team with four points including three goals while Halpin finished with three scores of her own along with six ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Giacona and Carpenter each scored twice in the win with Carpenter accounting for six ground balls and five draws while O'Dea was credited with a goal and an assist.
As a team, Fisher held Oswego to just 15 shots overall and forced its opponent into 26 turnovers.
Shannon Foster picked up six ground balls and forced a season-high five caused turnovers while
Ella Stewart had two caused turnovers in all.
In goal,
Lilly Goodsell (1-2) earned the win after allowing just four goals over 60 minutes of play. She made three saves overall.
The Cardinals are off until 4 p.m. on Monday when they play their home opener inside Growney Stadium against No. 17 Trinity College.
