HENRIETTA, N.Y. – Connor McHugh delivered five scoreless innings and the St. John Fisher College baseball team's bullpen yielded one hit over four innings as the Cardinals shut out the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers, 3-0, on Wednesday at Tiger Stadium. With the win, Fisher improved to 4-5 on the year while the Tigers fell to 8-3 following the loss.
McHugh scattered just two hits to move to 1-1 on the year as the junior finished with one strike out on the afternoon.
Kenneth Westbrook pitched a contactless sixth inning before
Christian Maloney gave up one hit and had two Ks over two innings of work.
Logan Persse nabbed his first save of the year after tossing a perfect ninth inning.
After four scoreless frames, the Cardinals got on the board in the top of the fifth with two runs on two hits and a Tigers' error.
Evan Bowers led off the inning with a single to center and moved into scoring position when
Luke Duffy dropped a sacrifice bunt. With a runner at second and one away,
Nick Lemire reached on an infield error that allowed Bowers to scurry home before
Ben Lavery clubbed a run-scoring double to left field to make it 2-0.
Holding a two-run cushion, Fisher tacked on an insurance run in the next inning when Bowers was credited with an RBI after being plunked with the bases loaded.
The Cardinals will be back in action at 6 p.m. on Thursday when they travel to the University of Rochester for the first of a three-game set.
