Fisher Tops Misericordia in First Game of Medgar Evers Tournament

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team were on the road on Thursday, battling against Misericordia University in day one of the Medgar Evers Tournament. The Cardinals held onto the lead after 40 minutes of play to come out on top by a score of 84-82. Fisher holds a record of 4-4, while the Cougars fall to 5-5.

Brendan Trapper started the scoring for the Cardinals with a jumper assisted by Jack Foley just 40 seconds into the game. Foley then made a great defensive play to get the ball and passed to Daniel Cook to finish on a fast break layup. At the 16:37 minute mark the Cardinals had to fight back from a five point deficit. Foley hit a three pointer to start the run for the Cardinals as they chipped away. Matt Lettko tied the score up at 14, and the Cardinals never let up from there. Brendan McRoy hit a three pointer, assisted by Sean Williams with 2:45 left in the first half to give Fisher and eight-point lead, their biggest of the half. The Cougars fought back, but Lettko finished a fast break layup with 2:10 left, to bring the gap back up to eight. Going into halftime Fisher led by a score of 41-37.

The Cougars got a fast start in the second frame, but Cook wasted no time answering back with a layup to start the scoring for Fisher. A Cook defensive rebound turned into a transition three pointer for Foley, and the Cardinals took the momentum and never gave it up. Connor Recore got on the board for the first time with 11:54 left in the game. He finished a layup assisted by Lettko. Recore will go on to tally five more points on the night to help with the overall second half success. Fisher's biggest lead of the game, 14 points, came with 6:46 minutes left, from a layup by Lettko. The Cougars fought back until the last whistle but it was not enough, The Cardinals defeated the Cougars by a final score of 84-82.

Foley and Cook led the team in points for the night, both ending with 19. Cook had 11 rebounds, five assists, one block, two steals and went 50% on field goals. Foley finished with five rebounds, three assists, one block, two steals and went 3-for-4 on his three point attempts. Trapper ended with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one block. For the team, they ended the night with a 52.5% field goal percentage and went 70.6% in their free throw attempts.

Up next for the Cardinals, they will compete in their second game of the Medgar Evers Tournament, against SUNY Canton. The contest is slated for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
