PITTSFORD, N.Y – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team hosted Alfred University on Friday Night. A well-fought 40-minute game resulted in the Cardinals winning by a final score of 58-44. With this result, Fisher moves to an overall record of 5-2 and a conference record of 1-0.
The Cardinals started the game trailing, with the Saxons scoring the first five points of the game.
Sidney Tomasso scored the Cardinal's first points with a good jumper. Alfred continued to increase their lead, pushing the score to 10-2. A good layup by
Katie Moravec helped end that run. Fisher quickly caught up, coming as close as 13-12, after a good jumper by
Presleigh Brunner. The Saxons, however, won the first quarter, leading 16-12. The Saxons carried their momentum into the second quarter, pushing their lead up to 21-14.
Emilia Johnson ended that run, scoring a good layup. The two teams went back and forth, taking multiple free throws each, but the Cardinals did not end up catching the Saxons, trailing at halftime, 30-22.
The second half started out much stronger for the Cardinals, with a seven-point run that was started by
Kaitlyn Walker's layup in the first minute. The two teams went back and forth until three minutes in, with Johnson scoring a three-pointer that tied the game up, 34-34. The Cardinals built on that momentum, ending the quarter leading 43-38, thanks to a layup by
Kelly Moravec. The fourth quarter started strong, with Johnson scoring a three pointer that pushed the lead to 46-38. Fisher continued running away, with the final points coming from Brunner, who scored a three pointer. Multiple defensive rebounds in the last four minutes helped the Cardinals secure their win, 58-44.
Walker was a huge contributor for the Cardinal's win, scoring a total of 20 points and adding two assists, and nine rebounds. Johnson had a great game as well, collecting eight points, one assist, and five rebounds. Tomasso had a well-rounded game, scoring six points and having five rebounds.
The Cardinals play at home again on Saturday, Dec. 3 as they host Elmira College, with a 2 p.m. start time.
