PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University football team is set to play their final road game this season, with a matchup at SUNY Cortland. The Cardinals enter the week with a 4-4 record, having come off a 44-26 win over the Hartwick Hawks.
Last Time Out: The defense of the Cardinals made an impactful play of the game when they forced a turnover on downs on the first Hartwick drive. Seeking the capitalize, the offense went 56 yards over eight plays to score the first touchdown of the day, which was scored on an 11 yard run by
Malachi Duvall. Up 14-3 in the second quarter, the Cardinals tacked on another score, which included a 39 yard pitch-and-catch from
Aaron Chase to
Gabe Maloni. The Cardinals would go on to record 435 total yards, with 231 coming on the ground.
Scouting Cortland: Cortland enters the week with an 8-0 record, including a 5-0 record in the Empire 8 conference. This is the second straight season Cortland has started 8-0, having gone 10-0 in the regular season last year. Cortland is coming off a 31-8 win over Alfred, out gaining them in offense 508-152. The team averages 49 points per game and 395 yards per contest.
Chase-ing 1,0000: The offensive player to watch this week is
Aaron Chase, who had a 78.9% completion rate last week after throwing five touchdowns and just one interception. The first-year Chase has thrown for 900 yards this season, and recorded his longest passing play last week (43 yards). Over the last two games, Chase has completed 31-49 (63.3% completion rate), and has thrown six touchdowns to two interceptions.
Defensive Player to Watch: Jonathan Ellison is the defensive player of the week to watch, having recorded 3 solo tackles and being credited with 3 assists in the win over Alfred. Over five games this season, Ellison has tallied 12 solo tackles and seven assists, giving him 19 total. Last year, across six games, Ellison also had 19 total tackles, though he was only credited with five solo tackles.
