Men’s Basketball Can’t Hold off Yellowjackets

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team dropped their Thursday night contest against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets by a 81-76 final, bringing their overall record to 1-3 on the season. The Cardinals will look to rebound on Saturday night in their second contest of the annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout, when they take on the RIT Tigers at 8 p.m.

The Cardinals started the first half strong, leading 16-2, five minutes into the game. The Yellowjackets shaved the deficit to 10, down 24-14. Fighting back, the Yellowjackets shrunk the lead to six at 33-27, but the Cardinals held off the Yellowjackets. The Cardinals shot 17-for-31 (54.84%) from the paint in the first half, while adding four threes, en route to the 40-31 lead. Brendan Trapper hit three of the four three-pointers, leading the Cardinals with 13 points in the first half. Meanwhile, Daniel Cook went 4-5 in field goals in the first, tallying nine points.

The success of Trapper and Cook continued into the second half, who were credited with 21 points. The Cardinals shot just 11-27 (40.7%) in the second half from the paint and sank five of 14 (35.7%) threes. The output from Trapper and Cook was not enough to hold off the Yellowjackets, who put up 50 points in the second half. Out of the break, the Cardinals were able to maintain the lead until the ninth minute of the second half, where the Yellowjackets were able to tie, and eventually overtake Fisher.

From there, the Yellowjackets went on a 20-9 run to take a 73-62 lead, with just over four minutes in the game. Fisher recovered to bring the deficit to five, down 79-74, but the Yellowjackets were able to hold off further momentum.

Fisher scored 19 points off turnovers, compared to 13 for the University of Rochester. The Yellowjackets outperformed the Cardinals in second chance points, 13 to eight.
