Women’s Volleyball Clinch Playoff Birth As They Celebrate Seniors

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team were at home on Saturday for a tri-match, hosting Medaille University and Elizabethtown College. The Cardinals began the day by defeating the Mustangs to extend their match win streak to eight and their set win streak to 24. They then had both streaks snapped by the Blue Jays as they fell 3-1. Those results put Fisher at 11-5 on the year and 6-0 in conference, which clinches a playoff berth in the Empire 8 Conference playoffs.
 
Fisher 3 – Medaille 0
 
The Cardinals were dominant in this match winning in straight sets, 25-9, 25-10 and 25-16. They trailed just once, which was a 1-0 deficit in the third set, which they quickly over came with six straight points. Katie Leaty led the way in assists with 14 which moves her over 1,500 in her career and into ninth place in St. John Fisher all-time assists list. Emily Brochey also finished with double digit assists with 10. Lindsey DeBonis and Delayne Young each finished the match with six kills.
 
Fisher 1 – Elizabethtown 3
 
Fisher kept their set win streak after taking the first frame 25-20, but then dropped three straight sets 25-20, 25-20 and 25-19. The Cardinals were in every set, trailing the Blue Jays 20-21 in the second, 20-23 19-21 in the third and they were all tied at 18-18 in the fourth. Leaty collected another 24 assists, while Kiana Walker, Brochey and Kiera Hartpence were busy on defense with 19, 12 and 14 digs respectively. On the offense, Young recorded 14 kills, while Walker and DeBonis collected six each.
 
Up next is the final regular season home game for the Cardinals as they welcome rivals Nazareth College on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
