Men’s Soccer Dominates Second Half to Defeat Houghton

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team hosted Houghton University on Wednesday for an Empire 8 matchup. After a hard fought first half, Fisher pulled away, securing a 5-1 victory. The Cardinals now stand at 6-4-2 on the season and 5-1 in the conference, while the Highlanders hold a 3-10-2 record and are 1-3-2 in conference play.

The first half started with a Fisher scoring opportunity just 29 seconds in by Brennan Brown, but it was saved by the goalie. Houghton was first to get on the board at the four minute mark. Just eight minutes later, Fisher answered back with a goal from Ben Woolingham, on a cross from Riley Rease. The Cardinals had six more opportunities in the first half to pull away, but none found the back of the net. The two teams battled the rest of the half to close out at 1-1.

The second half started, and the Cardinals quickly broke away from the Highlanders. Justin Bonetto started the scoring with a penalty kick opportunity, capitalizing with a perfectly placed ball to the goalies left side at the 55th minute. Fisher had five opportunities before capitalizing on a corner kick by Bonetto with Parker Hotchkiss on the end of it to put it away. The fourth goal of the game was a 2-on-1 breakaway opportunity by Brown assisted by Nick Rippe. To finish out the scoring for the Cardinals was George Ross off a corner kick by Ben Conrow with just 2 minutes left in the game. The Cardinals dominated the second half to finish with a 5-1 win over the Highlanders.

Up next for Fisher is another Empire 8 matchup on Saturday, Oct. 22 as they host Russell Sage College at Growney Stadium for their Senior Day. The contest is set to start at 3 p.m.
