PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team will play a slate of four games this week, including a mid-week matchup against Empire 8 rival, Nazareth College. The Cardinals will take on the Golden Flyers on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m., in the Manning & Napier Varsity Gym before heading to RIT for three games this weekend. Fisher is set to take on the Tigers at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 before facing Clark University at 11 a.m., and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15.
Empire Dominance: With their win over Medaille on Saturday, Fisher (11-5, 6-0 Empire 8) clinched a spot in the Empire 8 championship. The Cardinals are seeking to become Empire 8 champions for the fourth consecutive season, which would mark the first time this feat has occurred in the conference.
Katie Leaty, Lindsey Debonis, and
Sydney French have been apart of the three previous teams to win the conference.
Through the six games in conference play this season, Fisher has yet to drop a set. In eight conference games last year, Fisher dropped just three total sets. The Cardinals will play three more conference games this season.
Scouting the Opponents: Fisher has beat Nazareth in six straight games, beating the Golden Flyers 3-0 last season behind a 10-kill performance from Debonis.
Last season, RIT ultimately bested the Cardinals in 5, winning 3-2. While Fisher won the first and third set, they were unable to carry the momentum into the fourth and fifth sets – leading to the win for the Tigers. Debonis finished with a career high 17 kills, and she was supported by
Delayne Young, who finished with 10 kills, and
Katie Leaty, who tallied a career high 53 assists.
Fisher has yet to take on Clark University or WPI. Clark University enters the week with a 10-9 record. WPI has gone 9-7 overall.
Player to Watch: Graduate student
Kiana Walker has played extremely well this season while switching positions. Walker is set to take on her alma mater when the Cardinals face the Tigers on Friday night; expect a big night from the standout player.
Last season with RIT, Walker finished third in the Liberty League with 4.02 digs per set and fourth with 0.53 aces per set, logging a season-high 25 digs against St. John Fisher. Over three seasons at RIT, Walker finished with 650 digs and 79 aces.
This year, Walker has tallied 104 kills and 15 service aces in 48 sets played. Over her last four games, Walker has hit 0.220.
