GENESEO, N.Y. – Although the St. John Fisher College field hockey team went nearly stroke-for-stroke with the SUNY Geneseo Knights on the stat sheet tonight, the Cardinals dropped an 0-2 decision to their regional rival at College Stadium. Fisher skid to 1-2 overall with the loss, while Geneseo remained undefeated and improved to 3-0 on the year.
The two squads went back-and-forth for the first 30 minutes of action, as the hosts earned three more corner opportunities and two more shots than Fisher as they headed into the intermission. The Cardinals' back line of
Abby Harris,
Rileigh Luste,
Sarah Woods, and
Selena Emery kept the threatening Knights out of scoring range as all six of their shots in the half were turned away, including two saves by Fisher goaltender,
Sophia Trozzi.
Just a minute and a half into the second half, Geneseo jumped on its first best opportunity at net, which slipped past the back line, giving the Cardinals almost a full two quarters to rev up its own chances.
Following a penalty corner and four straight shots on goal, Fisher found itself on the opposite side of the ball to stop a Geneseo fast break opportunity. Perhaps the most impressive play of the game occurred, as a Knights forward broke loose and beat Trozzi, but her shot was stopped in its tracks by a diving Luste, who earned a defensive save for her effort.
Although the Cardinals tacked on eight shots in the fourth quarter, three more than the hosts, none could find its way between the posts, while Geneseo tacked on one more score just five minutes before the final whistle.
Bre Socker, who is just one assist and two goals away from becoming the Cardinals' all-time leader in both categories, led Fisher with an astounding eight shots, three of which were on goal, while
Gianna Palma had two chances at net, and
Alyssa Andres,
Audrey Grieb,
Molly Fisher, and
Sam Choate split the remaining four tries.
Trozzi, whose goalkeeping record now falls to 1-2 with the team's, recorded six saves on the night, including an impressive lay-out of her own in the final period.
Fisher looks to get back on track this Saturday, September 11, when they hit the road for a 2 P.M. square-off with the New Paltz Hawks.
