Fisher's Goal Lifts Field Hockey to Non-Conference Win over Ithaca, Socker Ties All-Time Assist Record

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team needed just one goal in Saturday's non-conference bout with regional foe, Ithaca College, as the Cardinals blew up the opponent's chance to stay undefeated. With the 1-0 victory, Fisher evens out their season record to 1-1, while the Bombers were handed their first defeat of the year to move to 1-1.

Although Ithaca opened up play with a quick corner opportunity, the Cardinals were not phased as they came back to rock the Bombers with three corners and four shots of their own in the first period alone.

With Fisher possessing a 5-2 shot advantage and a 5-1 penalty corner edge going into half time, both teams took the physicality to the next level for the final 30 minutes of play.

Eight minutes into the third period, the Cardinals found their golden opportunity, as Bre Socker broke loose on the far side of the field before crossing a defender and the Bombers' keeper as her shot did not find the back of the cage, but instead the end of Molly Fisher's stick as she tapped in the goal. The go-ahead goal was Fisher's fourth of the year, following her impressive hat trick in Wednesday's 2OT loss at William Smith. Socker's assist ties her as the Cardinals' all-time leader in assists, a record which was set just two seasons ago by Lindsay Scott who totaled 33 helpers in her career.

Later in the period as Ithaca pressed on to tie the score, Sophia Trozzi stood tall as Fisher's go-to keeper made an unbelievable diving save at the near post – one of the sophomore keeper's pair of stops on the day as her record in goal improved to 1-1.

Stuffing the stat sheet for the Cardinals were Socker, who shot five times and recorded the day's lone assist, Fisher, who's goal was one of three shots she took on the day, Alyssa Andres and Emma Cooper, who both recorded a shot.

The Cardinals are back to work on Wednesday, September 8, when they take the trip down to SUNY Geneseo for a 7 P.M. matchup under the lights with the Knights, who are receiving votes in the NFHCA Preseason Poll.
