WASHINGTON, Pa. – After dropping a nine-spot in their season-opener this past week, the St. John Fisher College women's soccer team continued upon its win streak with a 2-1 non-conference victory over Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 2-0 to start the year – their best start to a season since 2015 – while the Presidents fell in their second-straight game.
The visitors dominated possession from the very get-go as the Cardinals took seven shots and were awarded two corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, while W&J recorded just one shot.
After the Presidents' came out of halftime firing with three shots in 10 minutes, Fisher has its' next best opportunity on goal, when
Jessica Aldred made a stop in the backfield and went coast-to-coast, firing her own shot that ricocheted off the opposition's net. The senior's 56th-minute goal was the first of her career in Cardinal and Gold, as she recorded two assists in the last three years.
A 20-minute deadlock ensued, until W&J knotted up the score following a corner kick in the 81st minute. Five minutes later, however,
Carli Kovarik found the back of the net for Fisher as her rebounded game-winning goal made her the Cardinals' leading scorer with four goals on the season.
Hannah Robinson got the call between the pipes for Fisher today, as the freshman made two saves in 90 minutes played to bring her goaltending record to 1-0.
The Cardinals shot 10 times on the day as Kovarik,
Emma Spelman, and
Siobhan McMakin each notched two tries, while Aldred,
Madison Scull,
Emma Donovan, and
Isabella Peracchi split the remaining four.
Fisher has a week's rest before taking their home field again next Saturday, September 11 when they welcome the Golden Eagles of Brockport to Growney Stadium for a 4 P.M. contest.
