Women's Soccer Bested by Hartwick in Empire 8 Opener

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team fell in its Empire 8 debut on Saturday after losing to Hartwick College, 2-0, at Elmore Field.  With the defeat, Fisher fell to 4-3-0 on the year and 0-1-0 in the conference while the Hawks improved to 3-1-3, 1-0-1 on both fronts.

Neither team would break through until the 38th minute when the Hawks sent a long pass through the Cardinals defense that found its mark to make it 1-0.

As the game wore on, the lead remained in Hartwick's hands despite Fisher accounting for five shots in the second half.  Holding a 1-0 advantage in the 81st minute, the Hawks sent a crossing pass from the left side and toed it into the corner of the cage to extend their lead to two goals with time running short.

Down by a pair, Fisher looked to work the seams, but was unable to generate anything on the offensive end of the field as the final horn sounded.

In all, the Cardinals accounted for 11 shots in the loss with Carli Kovarik and Isabella Guarracino each taking three.  Emma Spelman had two shots to her credit while Kayla Rhude, Alexis Gossage and Jessica Aldred each recorded one shot.

In goal, Halle Tickell moved to 4-3-0 after making two saves over 90 minutes of action.

The Cardinals are scheduled to be back in action at 2 p.m. next Saturday when they head to Houghton to take on the Highlanders in another Empire 8 contest.
